Publishers Can Boost Revenue, Improve Content Discoverability with Newsstand Editions on iPad Tablet Devices
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Oct. 12, 2011 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced that, using Adobe® Digital Publishing Suite, leading publishers have created magazine applications that appear in the Apple Newsstand section of the Apple App Store and the Newsstand folder on the iPad. The announcement comes five weeks after Adobe announced that Adobe Digital Publishing Suite will include full support for iOS 5 Newsstand subscriptions. A sampling of publishers who have delivered apps enabled for iOS 5 Newsstand created with Digital Publishing Suite include National Geographic, Reader’s Digest and Condé Nast. Additional applications enabled for Newsstand and iOS 5 and built with Digital Publishing Suite are expected soon from Bonnier, Dennis Publishing, Newsweek, Rodale Inc., Smithsonian and Wenner Media.
“We are seeing rapid adoption of Adobe Digital Publishing Suite among publishers that want to create exceptional, engaging apps enabled for Newsstand that reinvent the magazine experience while making digital content more easily discoverable and marketable,” said Todd Teresi, vice president and general manager, Media Solutions, Adobe. “Adobe technology is lowering the barriers to publishing digital editions of magazines and newspapers as well as enabling publishers to better showcase and merchandise digital content on iOS devices.”
Newsstand apps created with Adobe Creative Suite® CS5.5 software and Digital Publishing Suite that are approved by Apple are recognized and added to the iOS 5 Newsstand. As new issues become available they are automatically updated in Newsstand through Digital Publishing Suite support for background downloading. Digital Publishing Suite can also generate apps compatible with Android™ and BlackBerry® tablets, though Newsstand support is unique to iOS 5 devices.
With applications enabled for Newsstand and iOS 5 push notifications, subscribers are told when updated content in magazine or newspaper apps is available in their personalized newsstand. New content is downloaded in the background as it becomes available, eliminating long wait times for subscribers. Publishers can also present icon covers displayed on the Newsstand shelf and drive more proactive marketing and merchandising activities to capture new subscribers and increase ad and subscription revenues.
“From the outset, tablets have been a game-changer for Condé Nast in our mission to deliver award-winning, influential content across platforms,” said Monica Ray, executive vice president of consumer marketing, Condé Nast. “Now that Digital Publishing Suite includes full support for iOS 5 Newsstand subscriptions, our users can always be sure they have the latest content as soon as it is available and we can showcase cover art, the most coveted real estate for a publisher with iconic titles, such as WIRED, The New Yorker, Glamour, Vanity Fair and Vogue.”
"Creatively, Adobe tools allow our editors to developstories for print and electronic publishing simultaneously, keeping the message dynamic and flexible, and taking advantage of each medium's strength," said Bill Marr, creative director, National Geographic magazine. "Adobe Digital Publishing Suite support for Newsstand is exciting because it will put National Geographic magazine at users’ digital doorsteps, making it easier for tablet users to explore the rich offerings enabled by the software."
“Using Adobe Digital Publishing Suite to create tablet editions of Reader’s Digest means we can easily and efficiently share content with our international editions,” said Peggy Northrop, vice president and global editor-in-chief, Reader’s Digest. “Adobe’s full support for Newsstand is attractive for us because it will provide our readers/customers with the convenience of having content immediately available in their digital newsstand as well as organizing all their magazines in one spot.”
