Hans Brinker Budget Hotel Turns Guest Anger into Staff Training.
New Live Chat Site And Designs By Anthony Burrill.
The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel, Amsterdam, has long prided itself on the very highest standards of mediocrity, including substandard beds and pre-industrial hygiene.
Inexplicably, staying in the noisy Dutch fleapit troubles some guests. Indeed, the most outraged have begun writing critiques on Trip Advisor.
Saddened, the Brinker has mounted a unique response.
The hotel’s new online campaign invites its Trip Advisor naysayers to take part in retraining the Brinker’s surly receptionist. Notorious for her poor impulse control and masterful passive aggression, this iron lady has drawn much criticism online.
A letter posted on Trip Advisor informs us of the receptionist’s attempts to become a new woman, the kind of woman able to use phrases like “thank you” without a sarcastic undercurrent. Guests are then asked to test this newfound civility to the very, very limit at a virtual Brinker reception.
By throwing all kinds of random abuse the receptionist’s way, you can ascertain whether she’s reformed or just irredeemably obnoxious. Every slur helps, giving Brinker management a fuller picture of what remains to be done (or perhaps ignored, in the hope the situation will remedy itself after all). This project then is a heady cocktail of revenge and public humiliation masquerading as professional development.

It’s also about bribery.

Because those lucky enough to light the receptionist’s fuse and receive a volley of abuse in return stand to win top Brinker goodies, including a mouth-watering half-pint of diluted shandy at the Brinker bar. The offers take the form of email vouchers designed by the legendary Anthony Burrill, responsible for the Brinker’s classic campaigns.
If the project fails, the Brinker consoles itself with the possibility of finally winning the accolade of most terrible hotel in Europe, a prize it recently and unexpectedly missed out on in the TripAdvisor awards.
